The good thing about using a variety of flours is that you do not need very much of any one flour and glass canning jars work really well to store the leftovers from opened bags. You do not need to buy everything on list; buy the ingredients you like and will use because ingredients are best kept fresh.

Knowing what to buy can be tricky when first starting out. I have put together a basic list of kitchen “must-haves” that you will want to have on hand. A case of wide mouth 1-litre glass canning jars with plastic screw-top lids is a great way to store small, opened bags of gluten-free flour. A wide mouth canning funnel allows you to pour the flour into each jar with ease. Cut the label from the bag and tape to the jar or go to “Labels” under Timesavers on this website to download labels. Canning jars are cost effective, fit well into the cupboard or refrigerator, are easily washed and can be relabeled for reuse.

Equipment Tools Other Items Storage

Using a variety of flours and other ingredients makes gluten-free baking more nutritious and when teamed with the right tools and techniques contributes to the quality (the taste, structure, strength, moisture, rise and tenderness) of the final products.

Although having multiple flours and other ingredients isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, The New Gluten-Free™ has designed a method of storing gluten-free ingredients that keep them fresh, safe, easy to identity and, most importantly, easy to use.

What you will need:

  • Glass canning jars (1L) and plastic screw top lids
  • Plastic canning funnel
  • Labels for your glass jars (either cut out and tape on the label from bag itself, download the Avery® label template and print at home.
  • Optional: coloured “sticky dotsˮ for the tops of your jars – we use yellow for flours, red for starch, green for legume flours and blue for nut/seed flours but feel free to choose your own.

Notes:

  • If you go through your ingredients quickly there is no need to wash your canning jars each and every time you refill them. When you do wash them, they clean up fantastically in the dishwasher. Allow to thoroughly air dry.
  • Flour, starch, and other dry ingredients can be stored on the shelf and do not need to be stored in the refrigerator (as long as they are in clean glass containers with plastic lids).
  • Ground Chia Seed and Flax seed, Nut/seed meals need to be stored in the freezer due to their high fat content. When adding nut and/or seed meals to your baking it is best to prepare then use them at the time of baking.
